If you are a fashionista on vacation in San Sebastián I highly recommend visiting the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum in Getaria. It is a 30 minute drive away from San Sebastián and the perfect foray for a rainy day or as a change from the beach.
Why Getaria, not Paris or Madrid? Well, for the simple reason that Balenciaga just happens to be from that inconspicious little village and his career as a couturier started in the very house the museum is located now, the Palacio Aldamar.
To be precise, it is located in a newly built annex to the Palacio, which is a majestic villa on a hilltop overlooking Getaria. It was the Residence of a Marchioness who mentored Balenciaga during the early years of his career.
After a museum tour with stops in San Francisco and New York 1,200 creations have now found a permament home in Getaria, including the most exquisite and rare pieces. It is the most extensive and most representative collection of Balenciaga designs in the whole world.
To keep the exhibition interesting and dynamic, the displayed pieces will be rotated every 6 to 12 months and will also include work by Balenciaga from other institutions and collections.
They are divided into six exhibition spaces which are organized in the same order as a traditional haute couture fashion show: Early Years, Day, Cocktail, Evening, Brides and Essential Balenciaga.
